TBTC APPLAUDS REINTRODUCTION OF JUDICIARY ACT

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 16, 2023) — Today, Senators Ed Markey and Tina Smith and Representatives Hank Johnson, Cori Bush, Jerry Nadler, and Adam Schiff formally reintroduced the Judiciary Act, which would add four new seats to the Supreme Court. The bill would bring the total number of justices to 13 to match our country’s 13 circuit courts, and offers an urgent solution to the Republican theft of the Supreme Court that has threatened our rights and undermined our democracy.

Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its president, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response to the news:

“The reintroduction of the Judiciary Act comes at a pivotal moment in the trajectory of our federal judiciary. With its utter disregard for ethics, constitutional precedent, and the health and well-being of Americans, the Supreme Court has lost the public's trust. The only way to rebuild faith in the Court is to restore balance, integrity, and independence by adding seats. The members of Congress who are leading this effort have proven that they understand the stakes for our democracy and they have a plan to do something about it. I hope everyone else will catch up quickly — because there’s no time left to wait.”

Sens. Markey and Smith and Reps. Johnson, Bush, Nadler, and Schiff are joined by more than 60 additional leaders in the House and Senate who support the bill. More information on the Judiciary Act is available on Take Back the Court Action Fund’s website.
