TAKE BACK THE COURT STATEMENT ON FULTON V. CITY OF PHILADELPHIA SUPREME COURT RULING

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 17, 2021) — Take Back the Court Director Aaron Belkin today released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court ruling on Fulton v. City of Philadelphia:

“Today’s ruling in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia should set off alarm bells — this is a very real and scary look at just how much Mitch McConnell and the Federalist Society have succeeded in pushing the Court to the far right. Just a few years ago, the Supreme Court ruled marriage equality the law of the land. But now we have progressive justices being forced to compromise with bigots just to avoid an even worse, more broad ruling allowing government-sanctioned discrimination. The three liberal justices are attempting to buy time, but they are far outnumbered by hyper-conservative justices, including those in stolen seats, and time is running out. We’ll keep turning back the hands of time on LGBTQ rights — and all other protections on discrimination — unless Congress passes the Judiciary Act of 2021 to expand the Supreme Court.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
