SUPREME COURT KICKS OFF TERM WITH CHANCE TO CUT OFF MORE PEOPLES’ RIGHTS TO FAIR SENTENCING

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 2, 2023) – Today, on the first day of a new Supreme Court term, the justices are hearing oral arguments in Pulsifer v. US — a case in which the court will decide who is eligible, through the First Step Act, for exemption from mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug crimes.

“In a fitting start to another Supreme Court term, the justices are considering a case that could deny justice to Americans facing unfair mandatory minimum sentences,” said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, president of Take Back the Court. “There are no lows to which the right-wing supermajority will not stoop; the justices have proven time and again that they’ll jump at almost any opportunity to roll back our rights and deny us our right to justice. That’s why we have to expand the court — and soon.”
