ON ANNIVERSARY OF JAN 6 INSURRECTION, RIGHT-WING FORCES STILL WORKING TO UPEND DEMOCRACY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 6, 2022) — Today marks two years since a violent right-wing mob launched a deadly attack on our nation’s Capitol. Take Back the Court Action Fund released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:

“January 6th, 2021 was a dark day in our nation’s history. A violent mob armed with pipe bombs, baseball bats, and stun guns attempted to attack lawmakers and overthrow a fair election in service of Donald Trump and his Big Lie. While the deadly Capitol coup attempt was defeated that day, the heinous forces trying to upend our democracy are still at play — and we’ve got to keep sounding the alarm. This time, they’re trying a slightly more covert approach: passing the project off to the Supreme Court.

“This rogue Court has spent the last decade on an anti-democratic crusade: gutting voting rights, opening the door to gerrymandering, and flooding our elections with dark money; and now, it’s considering an absurd scheme that could hand unprecedented, unchecked power over federal elections to state lawmakers. The stolen Court is operating as the Republican Party’s legal department, attempting to silence the voices and votes of the American people to impose a hateful, extremist minority rule.

“We can’t let this right-wing power-grab continue unchecked. To save democracy, we have to expand the Supreme Court.”

Take Back the Court Action Fund recently released an interactive map tracking the potential consequences if the Court’s right-wing justices side with Republicans in this term’s Moore v. Harper case. The analysis found that if the Court lends legitimacy to the radical so-called “Independent State Legislature Theory” in Moore, it could potentially hand as many as 37 electoral votes to the Republican candidate in 2024.
