JUSTICE THOMAS DIDN’T PAY BACK QUARTER MILLION DOLLAR R.V. LOAN, NYT FINDS

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 25, 2023) – New reporting in the New York Times this afternoon confirms that Justice Clarence Thomas “failed to repay a ‘significant portion’ — or perhaps any — of the $267,230'' he borrowed from his wealthy friend Anthony Welters to purchase a luxury R.V. during his tenure on the Supreme Court. The news follows a Times report from August laying out the details of the deal, along with Welters’ and Thomas’ friendship.

“As if a zero-down, sweetheart loan wasn’t sketchy enough, now we learn that Thomas didn’t even pay it off — it was just a straightforward, unreported cash gift," said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, president of Take Back the Court Action Fund. "Welters previously said the loan was ‘satisfied,’ so If Thomas didn’t pay him back in dollars, you have to wonder how exactly he made good on his debt.”
