CONGRESSIONAL DEMS RIGHT TO LOOK INTO DOBBS LEAK CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Sarah Lipton-Lubet: “This is a great step — hopefully one of many — toward Congress holding the Court accountable…”

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 8, 2022) — A new CNN report this morning revealed that leading congressional Democrats are looking further into the Supreme Court’s sham Dobbs leak investigation. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Hank Johnson reportedly sent a letter to Michael Chertoff, the allegedly independent validator of the probe who was later revealed to have secret contracts with the Court to the tune of $1 million.

“Michael Chertoff’s secret contracts with the Supreme Court gave him a million reasons not to rigorously investigate the justices to the same extent as rank-and-file staff. I’m glad to see Senator Whitehouse and Representative Johnson looking into this obvious conflict of interest,” said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, president of Take Back the Court Action Fund. “This is a great step — hopefully one of many — toward Congress holding the Court accountable for corrupt and unethical behavior since the justices are clearly unwilling or unable to do it themselves.”

In January, Take Back the Court Action Fund sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin and House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan urging their committees to investigate special treatment given to Supreme Court justices during the Court’s internal investigation. The letter suggested 18 questions lawmakers should ask the Court, including why the justices were excused from signing affidavits, who had input into that decision, what guidance or restrictions the Chief Justice put on the investigation with regard to the justices, and more.
